I thought I'd start out my Real Golf Stories with someone who is close to me - my husband.
While it was my dad who introduced me to golf, Ryan was the one who really got me back into playing consistently and we've found we really enjoy playing together (not something a lot of couples can say.) So, here is his story.
What's your handicap?
My handicap is a 10. Right now with not much time to practice, it's hard to improve. But, I continue to keep my short game sharp by chipping and putting at the practice green as often as I can.
When did you start playing golf?
I started playing golf in the summer of 2013. That's a little over three years ago and I'm pretty happy with how much I've progressed since I started. It started as a beer drinking activity with friends, but I quickly became addicted to the game. Ever since, I've taken it really seriously. I started to see myself improve and it was noticeable, which was really got me hooked. That's what's fun.
What was the biggest factor in your improvement?
In the beginning, a few lessons got me proper stance, posture, grip, etc. The basics. The basics are underestimated. But, after that, what really helped the most was being comfortable with a club in my hand. I always had a club in my hand at home, did a lot of practice swings at home, went to the range as often as I could, but I still maintain the thing that helped the most was a year membership at PGA Tour Superstore. While hitting off mats wasn't the most telling of my game, it helped me ingrain a solid stroke and made me really comfortable with my swing.
What is your favorite golf website (besides the Golfer Babe, of course)?
Easy - Golfwrx.com. There is so much information on that website from equipment to instruction and video use. The forums are great because it's all things golf. Anything you want to know you can find there and it's really hard to beat truthfully. I started as just a lurker, but then ended up making an account. I read up a lot on equipment and was able to educate myself on what would be best for me, also tips and reviews from people about golf balls and really anything I could think of. One of my favorite things is to hear stories from people who have been playing for a really long time.
Who is your favorite golfer?
That's a tough one. I really do like a hand full right now. I'm stoked that Tiger Woods is back because it's Tiger.. you know. He will be really fun to watch and see if he can be competitive again. Freaking Dustin Johnson though. That swing and particularly his driver and irons are so fun to watch. Last season he worked on his wedge game and that's what got him player of the year. So, overall really excited for this season. Lots of good players in the field.
What are your golf goals for the next year?
One of my short term goals is to play more golf. I'm lucky that I get a year-round golf season, so that shouldn't be too hard. Second goal is to become a much better putter. And, last goal is to shoot consistently in the 70's.
